On the death of Queen Elizabeth II, one national news commentator pointed out that "dignity" and "decency" were the two most common words people used when remembering her.
We have all seen and experienced these attributes. Indeed, we can site examples of each. Yet both “dignity” and “decency” in civil society today seem more the exception than the rule. Here are three such examples:
Early in my career as a chemical sales representative, I landed a large piece of new business. My immediate supervisor arranged for my contribution to be recognized at the highest level of the company irrespective of the fact that the company lacked a formal recognition policy. During an offsite sales meeting I was informed that the executive committee had authorized an informal award. I was handed a check and a letter signed by the President and CEO of the company thanking me for this accomplishment. The check was appreciated and I doubt I could find the letter in my files today.
Nevertheless, the decency of that manager in arranging that award and the dignity he conferred upon me for a job well done will never be forgotten.

A senior HR Executive client described an experience he had while working with one of their major production facilities. It involved extensive, tough, negotiations and solution development meetings between operational management and the elected union representatives that went on for months. Shortly after
successful conclusion of negotiations and the subsequent dramatic operational improvements they resulted in, he moved to Florida. Within a few months, a hurricane hit causing major property damage and injuries. The only communication he received from that plant’s personnel expressing concern for him and his family was from the Union President. The decency of that single act cemented a friendship that continues to this day.

The US military has always placed a high value on dignity and decency. A close friend whose father retired as a career officer received a letter from Ronald Reagan, the President in office at the time he retired, thanking him for his service. I suspect that this was, and still is, a common practice for the US Armed Services and for Presidents. Good for them and good for our country. My friend still has that letter.
For those fortunate enough to
work with such leaders, the motivating message sent by such actions are always valued and can only reinforce continued positive relationships, attitudes and contributions to the business….. and they will always be remembered.
